Philosophy
Good work requires as much thought as act, where technical knowledge is to be equaled with intellectual knowledge. As we don't craft things into an empty medium, but rather into an environment. Which means we are not to design for better things, but rather for better experiences. In this studio, we push not only for technical development, but also for a philosophical approach to making.
Design
Aiming to serve as an elegant extension of our physical form, our designs are centered around the human physical relationship with designed objects. Through scientific studies of the body, as well as behavioral studies of our interaction with everyday items, offering the users a healthier experience of their environment. Through comfort, function, and elegance, we aim to create the piece that feels just right, the one you subconsciously reach for, and the one you pass down for generations.
Craftsmanship
Honest workmanship is at the core of our values, as we owe it to ourselves and to the work we make to be of the highest quality. Through continues learning and practice, we aim to keep developing our skills, producing work with respect of the craft, the materials, and most importantly, the customer.
“Craftsmanship names an enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake.” -Richard Sennet, The Craftsman.
Patternmaking
Through studies of anatomy in relation to patternmaking, we analyze the possibilities of new ways of clothing our bodies. Understanding how traditional patternmaking systems break down our bodies into tubular sections addressing the negative space around it. We explore and aim to develop a new system that is built in reference to our body anatomically, taking into account movement, change of form, and tension points.
Combined with studies of fit and different approaches from different design schools, we also aim to introduce a new concept of "fit" that is interpreted within the patternmaking system. .
Crafts
Crafts are all connected in one way or another. The skilled architect understands light and sound behavior in relation to different materials. The skilled upholsterer masters the use of wood, metal, fabric, leather, and many different materials that are of different crafts. The skilled jewelry maker studies metals, gemology, and chemistry, in relation to our bodies. Understanding these connections between crafts allows for more possibilities and higher standards of work. In our studio, we seek knowledge in many different crafts in order to develop our work on a deeper level, technically and conceptually.
